University of Twente

The University of Twente is part of the 4TU federation together with the technical universities of Eindhoven, Delft and Wageningen. The Digital Society Institute of the University of Twente is one of the largest academic ICT research institutes in Europe with over 475 researchers. A clear focus of DSI is the integration of technology-based research and its application in specific domains. The Human Media Interaction (HMI) lab of the Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) does research into multimodal interaction: from brain computer interfaces to social robots. It is a multidisciplinary group in which computer science meets social science to investigate and design and evaluate novel forms of human-computer interaction. The HMI group is heavily involved in the MSc. programme “Interaction Technology” and the BSc. programme “Creative Technology”.

Dr. Angelika Mader
Associate Professor

| Project Coordinator |

Angelika obtained her Ph.D. at the Technical University Munich in Computer Science in the area of System Verification. As a PostDoc at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, and later at the University of Twente, her focus went to embedded systems. She has contributed to several EU projects received personal grants from the NOW. She has been reviewed for a number of conferences and journals and as a DesignLab Fellow, she supports the multidisciplinary and responsible design, as well as methods of design research.

Dr. Jan van Erp
Professor

| Workpackage Leader:
User perception (WP6) |

Jan van Erp is principal scientist with The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and full professor of tangible user interaction with the University of Twente. His research focusses on haptic and tactile interaction, multisensory perception, cognition, applied neuroscience, robotics, and human-machine collaboration in complex environments. Jan acted as program director for many R&D programs, including the 35M$ BrainGain program. Jan published more than a hundred peer reviewed papers (h-index 37) and holds several auxiliary board and advisory functions (a.o. for ISO, NATO and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences).

Dr. Edwin Dertien
Assistant Professor

| Workpackage Leader:
Soft mechatronics (WP5) |

Edwin has a deep passion for building Robotics, resulting in many robot(related) projects inside and outside University. He worked at the ‘Shadow Robot Company’ in London, working on air-muscle control of their famous humanoid hand and an eight-legged walking robot. After his graduation work on ‘Dribbel’, a powered ‘passive dynamic’ walking robot, he continued to work on energy efficient actuation of (walking) robots. He completed his PhD research on the development of a pipe inspection robot for life gas mains in which rapid manufacturing (3D printing) plays a major role.
He is an involved researcher and educator in the bachelor programme ‘Creative Technology’ at UT coordinating two modules on Smart Technology and Explorative Design.

Dr. Marco Raaben

| Project Manager |

Marco Raaben received his MSc. in Technical Medicine at the University of Twente in 2013. Then he was selected for the first clinical fellowship Technical Medicine at UMC Utrecht. In this position, he was responsible for the implementation of innovative technologies to improve diagnostics and treatments in healthcare. In 2016 he continued his work as Ph.D. and focused on the development of rehabilitation programs after lower extremity fractures. During his Ph.D. he developed skills as the project manager in an international, multicentre study funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. As the project manager, he is currently involved in three EU funded projects. One of these projects is WEAFING and he is responsible for the smooth implementation of the project.

Judith Weda
PhD canditate

Judith is a PhD canditate at the University of Twente in the Human Media Interaction group. She has a Masters in Human Media Interaction and a bachelors in Creative Technology. She is excited to apply her interest and experience in the interaction between people and technology in WEAFING.

Dr. Dasha Kolesnyk
Researcher

Dr. Dasha Kolesnyk is a researcher at the Human Media Interaction group, University of Twente. She combines insights and methods from psychology, marketing, and human-media interaction to study haptics, specializing in the area of social touch. Dasha is responsible for developing and testing use cases for WEAFING.

Dr. Hamid Souri
Postdoctoral Researcher

Hamid Souri received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Sharif University of Technology (2012), KAIST (2015), and The University of Auckland (2019), respectively. He holds years of research and work experience in flexible and wearable electronic devices mainly for medical and healthcare applications. In WEAFING project, his research focus is on modeling and simulation of textile actuators.
